Community Engagement
Working for the common good
The university’s commitment to using our wealth of skills, facilities and knowledge to make a positive contribution to society is reflected in our motto, “For the Common Weal” (For the Common Good). Our many community projects include the Caledonian Club, a groundbreaking initiative committed to widening access, changing attitudes to higher education and helping young people build key life skills.
From exploring the sustainability of a new community centre to establishing a weekly eye clinic and setting up maternity and child health groups, Glasgow Caledonian is passionate about reaching out to the wider community.
The Caledonian Club, employing GCU students as mentors, works with children and teenagers at nursery, primary and secondary schools in areas of Glasgow where traditionally few pupils have gone on to university. Children as young as three have taken classes at the university.
The Grameen Caledonian Partnership will leverage the university's teaching and research strengths to help tackle aspects of poverty and inequality.
